Record Low Fatality Year for Mining
The Mine Safety and Health Adminstration released Fiscal Year 2016 data today indicating that the last year was the safest in mining history. A record low of 24 deaths occurred at more than 13,000 mines nationwide. During a seven month span, industry limited deaths to 3.
To avoid complacency, MSHA is increasing agency actions including enforcement, outreach and compliance assistance. September saw 4 mining deaths and MSHA is looking to reset the count after the September results.
